Articulation Series part 6
Q: Do you think Reservation is necessary?
A: Yes I think Reservation is necessary as historical injustice and societal bias has led to certain classes of society remaining socially and educationally backward. To address this structural discrimination, reservation is necessary
Q: Do you think Reservation decreases efficiency?
A: I don't think reservations decrease efficiency. As a survey published in the Hindu has found, Reservation has infact increased efficiency in the Indian Railways by resulting in increased motivation levels thereby leading to greater productivity
Q: For how long should reservation continue?
A: Though reservations are not meant to be permanent, it is not possible to have a fixed timeline for ending reservations. Thus reservations should continue till there is structural bias and absence of level playing field in the society.
Q: Do you think the policy of reservation has been successfull in meeting it's objectives?
A: I think to an extent the policy has been successful, in the sense that there is improved access to education and govt jobs for the marginalised sections, along with restoration of a sense of dignity among them. However the policy still faces many challenges, for eg the benefits of reservation have not yet reached to all communities within the backward classes and the societal mindset has also not completely changed.
Q: Do you think there should be reservation in promotions?
A: I think reservation in promotions is required as the structural bias exists not only at the entry level but also at the level of promotions, where an element of discretion is also involved.
